Describe your work in a sentence.
I don't work. I only follow my passion.

What does an average day at work generally involve for you?
An average day would consist primarily of overseeing the purchase of gold and diamonds. As one of the largest wholesalers in the region, I need to ensure that I source the right products at the right price so that my customers get the best. I also ensure that the daily operations of all our eight retail stores run without a glitch.

What time does your day start and end? Do you often work late or take work home - or do you maintain strict work timings?
I am up and running quite early in the morning. Officially, I am active from 10am to 7pm. Even though my working hours are not fixed, I try to follow this timing in order to ensure that I maintain a good work:life balance. In spite of this, everyone I work with knows that I am available 24x7 for my business associates as well as my team members.

What is the #1 principle you follow at work?
The market dynamics of the gold and diamond industry are often in a state of constant fluctuation. I believe that to be successful in this dynamic industry, I need to keep myself updated on the market changes across the globe. I also believe in the power of negotiation, as it is one of the key factors that paves the way to success.

How do you organise your to-do list for the day?
Planning is critical and I follow a strict calendar with clear timelines. Of course, I keep a provision for contingencies but, overall, I break my day's activities into modules and ensure that I follow the timeline.

What is one important skill you think every professional should have?
That would be difficult to pinpoint, as I think a good professional should have a mix of diverse skills to succeed. It is very difficult to survive on one skill considering the market dynamics are given to change. A professional should, therefore, be multi-skilled in order to meet the challenges that his job demands. Each skill should complement the rest and only then will he be able to move forward in the right manner.

How do you deal with crisis situations that crop up during the workday?
Each situation that crops up requires different solutions. In the business world, there are no set solutions. However, I take advice from my father as well as from my senior associates to guide my decisions, whenever the need arises.

Who would you consider your role model as the perfect professional?
My father, Ramesh Vora, is my role model in both my personal and professional life. Whatever I am today is because of him. I have learnt so many things from him and only hope that I can be as inspiring as him when it comes to my own children. That said, my mother, Bharti Vora, has also been a major influence in my life. Her simplicity and strong adherence to human values are aspects that I try to imbibe in my life.

If you had one free hour in the day to relieve stress, how would you use it?
I would spend that time with my sons, Aarish and Etaash. Playing with them takes me to a different world. It is not only relaxing but also provides me with the required energy to meet new challenges.

What do you do to maintain a work-life balance?
I strongly believe that it is very important to maintain a work-life balance. Though it is quite difficult to move away from the numerous things that require my attention as part of work, I make it a point to spend time with my family. My wife, Arti, and my twin boys are my major stress relievers. I also listen to music and read several management-related books.
