Injaz, the world's first cloned camel, recently gave birth to a healthy female calf weighing about 38kg, according to the administrative director of the scientific team at the Reproductive Biotechnology Centre, Dubai.
Injaz, Arabic for achievement, is a female dromedary born on April 8, 2009, and was created using the ovarian cells of an adult camel slaughtered in 2005. The camel conceived in a natural way and delivered the baby after completing the normal gestation period. This proves that cloned camels are fertile and can reproduce. According to Dr Nisar Ahmad Wani, Scientific Director of the Centre, many cloned camels have been produced using cells from the skin of elite animals. The use of skin cells has made the process of cloning in camels easier.
State of the art, Reproductive Biotechnology Centre, established under the patronage of Shaikh Hamadan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has a mandate to develop and apply the latest biotechnology techniques to enhance the production of animals of the region.
