A worker has been sentenced to seven years in jail for stabbing his roommate to death after an argument over switching on the light. The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 29-year-old Indian worker guilty of murder and ordered his deportation at the end of his prison term.
According to prosecution records and based on the testimony of a witness, the worker, who works as a dyer, assaulted his compatriot and then stabbed him with a knife following a row over the light. The incident was reported on April 9.
An Indian driver, 23, said he learnt from a worker about the fight in a room at the workers accommodation in Jebel Ali. "It was after 9.30pm. I entered the room and saw the victim spitting blood."
He called the ambulance. By the time paramedics arrived, the victim had died. The driver said the victim had a stab wound in the upper right side of his chest.
"I learnt that they fought after the defendant turned off the light and the victim turned it on again several times. They were engaged in a physical fight before the accused stabbed the victim. The accused was not injured."
A police corporal said they arrested the defendant at the workers accommodation. According to the forensic report, the victim died due to severe hemorrhage in the chest cavity and the deep stab wound that cut through his right lung.
The verdict can be appealed.
