Ras Al Khaimah, long considered the UAE’s hidden gem, is fast emerging as one of the world’s most welcoming destinations — not just for tourists seeking a peaceful escape, but also for expats looking to build a life rooted in balance, community, and natural beauty.
With its laid-back atmosphere, scenic landscapes, and welcoming community, the emirate is becoming a standout choice for those seeking both relaxation and a sense of belonging.
For British visitor Atiyya Khan, Ras Al Khaimah offered a rare opportunity to completely disconnect. “I usually visit Abu Dhabi, but I wanted something new, somewhere quieter this time," she shared. "I did a lot of research trying to find a place in the Middle East, and Ras Al Khaimah kept coming up. So I decided to check it out for myself. As soon as I arrived, I was met with such a warm and welcoming experience it immediately set the tone for the rest of the trip," she added.

Khan’s visit was a blend of adventure and serenity, from tranquil sunset boat rides to her first-ever paragliding experience. “It reminded me of Abu Dhabi but with a more relaxed energy — no crowds, no rush, just nature and kindness,” she said, calling it the perfect escape from hectic city life.
Her only regret was not staying longer. "I would definitely recommend taking a few extra days to explore Ras Al Khaimah," she said. "I originally went just to relax, but after chatting with the hotel staff and hearing about all the amazing places to visit, I realised I had missed out on a lot. There’s so much more to see beyond the hotel, from nature wonders to cultural experiences. It’s definitely a great excuse for me to visit again.”
Balanced lifestyle
For many expatriates, Ras Al Khaimah offers more than just a scenic backdrop — it’s a place to thrive. Turkish expat Cenk Yuksel, who moved to the emirate seven months ago, found a balanced lifestyle that nurtures both professional ambitions and personal wellbeing. “I was drawn by the natural beauty and cultural authenticity, and career opportunities," he noted, praising the strong expat community and the ease of building meaningful relationships.
“(Here) you find yourself slowing down, appreciating nature, and forming deeper connections. It’s not just a place to work — it’s a place to live well.”
Similarly, Armenian entrepreneur Loris Minassians arrived in 2009 to launch a business through RAKEZ, but by 2020, he had made Ras Al Khaimah his permanent home. “It’s a city where you feel real life — talking with neighbours, greeting shopkeepers, being welcomed into local homes,” he said. For Minassians, the appeal lies in the city’s simplicity, accessibility, and cultural warmth.
International recognition
That sense of comfort and community is now reflected on the international stage. A recent InterNations survey ranked Ras Al Khaimah fifth globally —and first in the Arab world — among cities where expatriates feel most at home.
A Ras Al Khaimah Government spokesperson said: “We are immensely proud that Ras Al Khaimah has been recognised in the top five cities in the world where expatriates feel at home abroad. This achievement is a testament to the emirate's unique community spirit, welcoming culture and the quality of life we offer the people who come from all over the world to make a home here.
"With its relaxed pace, attainable lifestyle and breath-taking beachside living bathed in year-round sunshine, Ras Al Khaimah continues to stand out as a destination where people not only come to work or invest but to belong.”
Raki Phillips, CEO of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, echoed this sentiment. “This (global) is a testament to the unique offerings of our Emirate, where an integrated tourism infrastructure allows for diverse experiences from mountain adventures and natural escapes to desert and beach getaways.
"Furthermore, we are committed to building on these successes by enhancing livability and quality of life in line with our objectives, further positioning Ras Al Khaimah as a destination of the future on the global map."
