Residents' reaction was mixed to the Dubai Police's move to have separate walkways for families and bachelors as they go to witness the emirate's legendary New Year fireworks. Some called it unfair, while others said it will help avoid unruly behavior:
"It's really unfair that men have to travel longer distances and stand in different places to essentially see the same show as everyone else is ... It is biased and uncalled for. This is Dubai, the chances of men behaving in an unruly manner is slim." - Eshani Shekr, Dubai resident.
"This means that the single men will have poorer access to the finer aspects of the show. This is unfair ... might as well watch it from home. Men, too, are getting stuck in traffic to be part of the show." - Sumeera Wijesooriya, Dubai resident.
"This is good in a way, since it keeps children and women safe from unruly revelers. But if that is the case, they must also keep an easier segregated transport facility for bachelors." - Anoop Menon, Sharjah resident.
"It is unfair and discriminatory for men to be standing in a separate section." - Jyotsna Kanjhan, Dubai resident.
