The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE has issued a yellow alert for fog on Monday, February 23 night, continuing into Tuesday morning.

Residents have been driving through dense fog for a week, with the reduced visibility complicating commutes. Authorities have urged motorists to take all precautionary measures while driving under such conditions, which are expected to last from 10pm on Monday to 10am on Tuesday morning.

As seen in the map below, the fog will cover a significant part of the western coast, from Abu Dhabi in the south, covering Dubai, Sharjah and other towns up until Ras Al Khaimah. The NCM alert also corresponds to some internal areas of the country.

The yellow signifies expected areas of fog and mist. As the fog thickens on Monday night and Tuesday morning, the authority might change some areas to red. The NCM has warned that visibility might reduce further over the coming hours.

How to protect oneself in the fog

While the fog itself is not harmful, the reduced visibility it comes with can lead to road accidents.

Here are some rules to follow, shared by Abu Dhabi Police:

  • Comply with traffic safety measures

  • Stick to a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h when horizontal visibility decreases

  • Leave sufficient distance between vehicles

  • Avoid distractions, such as using your phone, while driving

  • Use appropriate front lights and avoid high beams, as these may reflect on the fog and reduce visibility further

The police reiterated that sticking to these rules ensures safety on the road, and that it is the driver's responsibility to stay aware of the guidelines issued by authorities in order to protect lives and property.
