Watch: Heavy rain, hail hit parts of UAE as unstable weather continues

Footage shared by UAE-based weather account Storm_centre shows intense rainfall sweeping across parts of the country, with heavy showers reported along the Dubai-Al Ain Road near Al Hayer.

The videos show motorists navigating rain-soaked roads as visibility drops under the heavy downpour, with water streaming across the road and vehicles moving cautiously through the conditions.

Another clip, shared by the UAE’s Dubbed Weatherman, captures hail and heavy rain pouring down around him and a friend.

The two can be seen standing in the downpour as hailstones fall alongside the intense rainfall, offering a striking glimpse of the severity of the weather conditions.

Yellow alert issued for rain

The unsettled weather comes as the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a yellow alert for rain in parts of the country, in effect until 9pm today (August 22).

The alert warns of the possibility of convective clouds bringing rainfall, along with fresh to strong winds that could raise dust and sand and reduce horizontal visibility.

According to the NCM, the weather is expected to be fair to partly cloudy today, with convective clouds likely to develop over eastern and southern parts of the country during the afternoon, bringing the possibility of rainfall.

Driver safety

The NCM has also issued safety guidelines today for motorists, urging drivers to take extra care on the roads during unstable weather conditions:

• Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary, and if travel is required, drive cautiously and remain alert to protect yourself and other road users.

• Use low-beam headlights when visibility is reduced.

• Follow weather updates through official channels and be prepared to comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

• Follow official NCM reports for the latest updates and avoid sharing or spreading unverified information.

Heavy rain on Friday

The latest alert follows heavy rainfall, thunder and lightning across parts of Abu Dhabi on Friday, August 21. The unstable conditions prompted a series of precautionary measures across the capital.

Abu Dhabi City Municipality temporarily closed all parks, recreational facilities and affiliated beaches and suspended events until further notice. Al Ain City Municipality also temporarily closed its parks.

The closures were introduced as a precaution to protect residents and ensure public safety amid fluctuating weather and heavy rainfall in several parts of the emirate.

Al Ain later announced that its parks had reopened, while Abu Dhabi also announced the reopening of its parks, recreational facilities and affiliated beaches.
