The 71-year-old has become a figurehead in the battle against the use of drugs to commit sexual abuse
Motorists and passengers in RAK were alerted to buckle-up by a smiling first Sergeant Sameer Abdullah, earlier this month, as he stood in the middle of the roads in RAK wearing a seatbelt to create awareness awareness on the importance of buckling up.
"My 'Buckle-up and Smile' drive is meant to alert and urge violators to fasten their seatbelts while also applauding compliant drivers in a more friendly and acceptable manner."
Non-compliant drivers - expecting to be pulled over and fined - when spotted by Abdullah, were instead welcomed with a polite warning with a smile.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, honoured Abdullah for his innovative drive.
Col Ali Saeed Al Alkeem, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department with RAK police, said the 'Buckle-up and Smile' drive is part of a one-month campaign during which traffic patrols will be deployed on all the roads of the emirate to "enlighten the drivers about the important of being fastened behind the wheel."
As per the federal traffic law, failing to fasten seatbelts while driving draws a fine of Dh400 and four black points, he warned.
Seatbelts have saved a significant number of lives, he pointed out.
Effective July this year, all passengers in a vehicle, need to buckle up. Until now, only the driver and the passenger seated in the front were required to wear a seatbelt.
Sherif Al Wakeel, Egyptian, told Khaleej Times that he forgot to fasten his seatbelt while driving to work today.
Al Wakeel thought that he would get a ticket. "He did not even stop me. He just waved, and I waved back with a smile and an acknowledging nod."
