Up to Dh4,000 fine: Abu Dhabi reveals penalties for littering, cigarette butt disposal

On Tuesday, Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport revealed revised penalties applicable for littering in the emirate.

Taking to Instagram, the authority announced the fines that could be imposed on the type of violation and its frequency. The list of new penalties includes a fine of Dh4,000 on a repeated offence.

In 2024, on UAE's 53rd National Day, Abu Dhabi Police issued 670 fines to violators for littering and using spray paints to paint on roads. These acts were committed by drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Here's the latest list of penalties and violations on littering, under the Regulation on the Preservation of Public Spaces:

Discarding cigarette butts outside designated containers

• Fine for first violation: Dh500

• Fine for second violation: Dh1,000

• Fine for second violation: Dh2,000

Disposing of personal waste resulting from eating & drinking outside designated containers

• Fine for first violation: Dh500

• Fine for second violation: Dh1,000

• Fine for second violation: Dh2,000

Disposing of, placing, or leaving waste, or any equivalent materials, in non-designated areas

• Fine for first violation: Dh1,000

• Fine for second violation: D2,000

• Fine for second violation: Dh4,000
