UAE welcomes Trump's lifting of Syria sanctions during Gulf visit

The UAE welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement to lift sanctions on Syria. The country considers this move a significant boost to promoting growth and prosperity.

A day after announcing he was lifting sanctions on the country, Trump on Wednesday also met with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh. Trump said Washington was exploring the possibility of normalising ties with Damascus.

On Tuesday, the US President announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria, a move sought by the new leader. "I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness," Trump said to applause in a speech in Riyadh. The announcement received a standing ovation.

The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, affirmed its unwavering support for achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people, commending the efforts made by the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in this regard.

The Ministry expressed its hope that these developments would contribute to economic recovery and the commencement of the reconstruction phase, thus achieving development and stability for the brotherly Syrian people.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the UAE's support for all efforts made to realise the Syrian people's hopes for security, peaceful coexistence, and development.
