DUBAI - By 2010, all tobacco companies in the UAE will have to carry health messages with appropriate graphic images, according to Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, head of the Smoking Cessation Committee, Ministry of Health.
'Our overall aim and hope is to reduce the incidence of smoking among people in the UAE,' she remarked at the end of a smoking cessation programme held recently in Dubai.
With more and more non-smokers concerned about the effects of passive smoking, we are hoping that it will have a knock-on effect on smokers, she added.
More than 200 people took the smokelyzer test during the programme in which smokers and non-smokers were given advice by doctors and their carbon monoxide (CO) levels checked.
The normal rate of CO in the blood is up to 2 parts per million.
A person who smokes a pack of cigarettes in an eight-hour period will see his CO blood saturation rise to between seven and 15 per cent, thus reducing the availability of oxygen to the body, the participants were informed.
Of the results recorded, it was estimated that 30 per cent of the people tested had high CO measuring 18 parts and above and 10 per cent were found affected with 6-7 parts which is the equivalent of smoking 6-8 cigarettes per day.As much as 40 per cent were worried about the effects passive smoking was having on their health.
