UAE's position against anyone who seeks to undermine security and prosperity in Jordan is "firm and unwavering", a top Emirati diplomat stressed on Tuesday.

Jordan announced earlier on the day that it had arrested 16 people, thwarting a plot that threatened national security, involving rockets, explosives and a factory to make drones.

In a statement, the General Intelligence Department said that plans "include cases related to manufacturing rockets using local tools". It also said that they were "training operatives in Jordan as well as training them abroad".

"The United Arab Emirates and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan share deep-rooted fraternal and historical ties, and their security is mutual," said Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President.

A Jordanian security source said the suspects were connected to the Palestinian militant movement Hamas. The group, which has been at war with neighbouring Israel since October 2023, has been accused of instigating anti-government street protests in Jordan, which has a large Palestinian population.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, has also strongly denounced and condemned a plot that threatened national security by inciting chaos and destruction within the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

In a statement, Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed the UAE’s unwavering position and strong condemnation of these criminal acts and its permanent rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism aimed at undermining security and stability in contravention of international law.
