Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to transform government services, eliminating the need for traditional websites and mobile apps. By enabling voice-powered interactions, AI will simplify complex tasks like renewing a driving licence, making them more seamless and efficient. This shift promises to reduce bureaucracy, improve service delivery, and provide citizens with a more personalised experience.
Mohamed Bin Taliah, Chief of Government Services, Government of UAE, during his session at the World Government Summit, said he envisions a future where citizens will communicate directly with the government through voice commands. Complex tasks like renewing a driving license or applying for a house will be made effortless.
"Instead of navigating through websites and mobile applications, we’ll be interacting with the government through AI. Whether it’s renewing a driving license or getting a house, AI will handle these tasks seamlessly, with minimal user effort," Bin Taliah explained.
He emphasised that while many governments initially believed that transitioning to digital systems would automatically eliminate bureaucratic challenges, this has not proven to be the case. "Digital systems and technology do not inherently solve bureaucracy. We must design our environment, policies, and procedures in ways that leverage technology to better serve people," he said.
Bin Taliah also highlighted the immense potential of AI to dramatically enhance government services. He compared AI’s capabilities to current technological systems, explaining that AI could perform tasks "a hundred times faster and more effectively" than today’s tools.
The integration of agentic AI where AI can manage entire processes on behalf of the user would allow governments to simplify and accelerate citizen services like never before.
Looking forward, Bin Taliah expressed confidence that AI would usher in an era of "conversational services" in the public sector. As governments adopt AI-driven solutions, the traditional reliance on websites and mobile apps will give way to a more intuitive, voice-powered interface. "The future is conversational," he remarked.
The Chief of Government Services emphasised that these advancements will ultimately create a more responsive, efficient, and user-friendly environment for citizens, providing easier access to essential services.
