A husband has gone on trial after being accused of forging his ex-wife's marriage certificate claiming that she got married to another man in Oman. The intention, it now emerges, was to relieve himself from paying her alimony.
Official court records stated that the Arab national had separated from his wife and the court ordered him to pay her a monthly alimony. Months after their separation, the man filed a complaint with the family affairs authorities claiming that his ex-wife got married to another man and that he wanted to be relieved from paying her the monthly alimony.
He also submitted a copy of the marriage certificate, he alleged, to have been issued to his ex-wife and her new husband in Oman as proof. The marriage certificate was later found to be a forged one.
Authorities then referred the man to the Abu Dhabi Misdemeanour Court on charges of forging a marriage certificate.
In court, the man admitted to presenting a copy of the marriage certificate to authorities but denied forging the document. He told the court that his sister-in-law from Oman emailed him the copy of the marriage certificate that was issued to his ex-wife and her new husband. He insisted that he had no idea that the document was a forged one.
"My sister-in-law told me that my ex-wife was married to another man. She also sent me a copy of the marriage certificate via email as proof. I have never been involved in the forgery and I have no idea that the marriage certificate was a forged one," the man said in court.
The trial was adjourned until January 17.
