UAE embassy in Yemen warns of impersonators using diplomatic identity in online fraud

The UAE embassy in Yemen has warned of impersonators using its identity to conduct fraud on online platforms, both inside and outside the country.

The embassy urged the community to avoid engaging with suspicious communications that falsely bear the name of diplomatic identities. Individuals must exercise extreme caution and make sure to not provide any personal information to fraudulent callers, the UAE embassy stressed.

UAE officials have often warned of scammers posing as government officials, law enforcement agencies or bank authorities to lure people into falling for financial scams.

Last month, five Asian men were sentenced to a month in jail and deportation after they were found guilty of impersonating police officers and defrauding an Arab national of Dh9,900.

They were found guilty of pressuring the victim into revealing his bank account details under the pretense of updating his records with the UAE Central Bank.

In 2024, in a Whatsapp poll conducted by Khaleej Times, more than 8,300 people said they had received phone calls or emails from scammers impersonating UAE authorities.

Apart from credit card details, these scammers even use voice phishing to trick residents into authorising UAE Pass OTP requests, revealing sensitive information such as Emirates ID details.
