Night driving offences in UAE: 30,000 motorists fined for headlight violation in 2024

Authorities across the UAE recorded approximately 30,000 traffic violations in 2024 for drivers operating vehicles at night without headlights, a clear breach of the Federal Traffic and Road Law.
The law mandates that drivers must turn on their vehicle lights between sunset and sunrise or whenever necessary to alert other road users to their presence.
The violations were distributed across several emirates: Dubai recorded the highest number with 10,706 violations, followed by Sharjah with 8,635, and Abu Dhabi with 8,231. Ajman recorded 1,393 violations, Ras Al Khaimah had 907, while Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah reported 74 and 67 violations, respectively, according to data gathered by Emarat Al Youm.

Dh500 and four black points
According to the Federal Traffic Law, the penalty for driving at night without using lights or driving in fog without using lights is a fine of Dh500 and four black points. The penalty for lack of a taillight or invalid turn signals is Dh400 and two black points.
Traffic departments across the UAE issued 10,932 violations last year against drivers for the absence of rear lights on their vehicles, according to statistics from the Ministry of Interior regarding traffic violations.
The violations were distributed as follows: 4,279 in Abu Dhabi, 3,901 in Dubai, 1,603 in Sharjah, 764 in Ajman, 246 in Ras Al Khaimah, 27 in Umm Al Quwain, and 112 in Fujairah.
Additionally, traffic departments across the country issued 34,811 violations last year for vehicles with faulty lighting. These were distributed as follows: 6,899 in Abu Dhabi, 4,329 in Dubai, 18,702 in Sharjah, 4,707 in Ajman, 26 in Umm Al Quwain, and 148 in Fujairah
