In the wake of ongoing regional attacks, the UAE announced a change in its warning alert system that notifies residents of when to take shelter in a safe place and when it is safe to resume normal activities.

The NCEMA said the system will remain fully operational to ensure timely public security alerts.

From now onwards, there will be two types of updates.

  • From 9am to 10.30pm: Current high tone for alert along with a standard text message tone for end of alert.

  • From 10.30pm to 9am: Standard text message tone for both alert and standard end of alert.

The system has been put in place to ensure timely alerts with the public urged to follow official instructions issued with any alert to ensure safety.

These alerts, issued by the Ministry of Interior across the UAE, are in the case of "potential missile threats", urging residents to seek immediate shelter in the closest secure building and to steer away from windows, doors and open areas, while awaiting further instructions.

Meanwhile, when the interception period is over, residents are thanked for their cooperation and assured the situation is safe to resume normal activities. They are still advised to remain cautious and taken necessary precautions and follow official instructions.

Meanwhile, Dubai Police had earlier issued a guideline for motorists who may receive the alert when on the road.

If you receive an emergency alert while driving, remain calm and continue driving carefully — do not stop abruptly on the road or pull over unnecessarily. Should you spot any military activity in the vicinity, do not film it, photograph it, or allow it to distract you from the road.

Once you safely reach your destination, move indoors immediately and take shelter in an interior space away from windows. Remain there until the official all-clear notification is issued.

What is a 'safe place'?

In an interview with Khaleej Times, Dr Saif Al Dhaheri, spokesperson of NCEMA, clarified what constitutes a “safe place” and how residents should respond when an alert is received.

A “safe place”, he explained, means moving indoors and away from windows and glass.

“If you are at home and receive an alert, move to an interior corner of the house or near the stairwell, away from windows and doors, to avoid potential debris or fragments,” he said.

“If you are outdoors, try to enter a building immediately. Do not follow the sound of any incident or gather to watch. Stay away and move to safety.”

He emphasised that while safety instructions must be followed strictly, daily life should continue as normally as possible.

“It is important to us that everyone in this country feels reassured and comfortable. This aggression should not affect our daily lives,” he said.
