UAE arrests wanted Moldovan citizen Vitaliy Pirlog in cross-border corruption case

The UAE announced the arrest of Vitaliy Pirlog, a Moldovan citizen wanted in connection with a cross-border corruption case, the Ministry of Interior said on Thursday, June 19.
Pirlog, who is the subject of a valid Interpol Red Notice, was arrested at the request of French authorities on June 15.
Pirlog was previously chairman of Interpol's Commission for the Control of Files and was the subject of a Red Notice on charges of forgery, bribery, solicitation, and fraud.
The arrest was carried out under ongoing coordination with international and regional partners, including law enforcement agencies and global organisations.

After his arrest, French officials acknowledged the actions take by the UAE Ministry of Interior, noting that such coordinated action underscores the importance of joint international action to combat cross-border crimes.
The UAE has in the past carried out such international arrests and extraditions.
Last month, an alleged top member of an Irish transnational gang was charged in Dublin with murder and directing organised crime after his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.
Sean McGovern, 39, who was arrested at his Dubai home in October, had been described by Irish police as the right-hand man of Irish cartel boss Daniel Kinahan.
McGovern, who had been living in Dubai for several years, is the first Kinahan cartel member to be arrested in Dubai, and is the first person ever extradited to Ireland from the United Arab Emirates.
In February, the UAE said it extradited a wanted French criminal Mehdi Charafa, back to France, where he was charged for drug-related offences.
Meanwhile in January, the UAE took Abdul Rahman Al Qaradawi into custody, following a provisional arrest warrant issued by Lebanese authorities.
Abdul Rahman Al Qaradawi faced charges of engaging in activities that aim to stir and undermine public security.
Lats year, a Filipino accused of sexually exploiting more than 100 children back in the Philippines was arrested in the UAE and had been extradited.
