The UAE on Monday approved a remote work system for government entities operating from outside the country. It is designed to leverage talent and expertise from outside the UAE to execute special tasks, complete projects, and conduct studies relevant to government operations.

Though the UAE has implemented remote work in federal entities since 2017, this is the first time it has been applied to employees working outside the country.

“(The system will) enable the UAE to tap into global expertise and specialised talent to execute projects and studies for federal entities,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, wrote on X after chairing a UAE Cabinet meeting.

The authorities concerned will identify jobs that can be performed remotely from outside the UAE. The country will also outline the conditions for contracted employees and their responsibilities.

The UAE Cabinet also reviewed the National Digital Economy Strategy that aims to increase the digital economy’s contribution to GDP from 9.7 per cent to 19.4 per cent. “We remain committed to strengthening the UAE’s position in the global digital economy through ambitious national initiatives and projects over the next six years,” said Sheikh Mohammed.
