The Emirates Authority for Standardisation & Metrology (ESMA) has given its nod to import 13,000 pre-owned vehicles. It has received 37,000 screening requests for used imported cars through its smart searching system.
Abdullah Al Maeeini, director-general of ESMA, said the used vehicles that received the go-ahead for import are eligible for monitoring mechanism, which was implemented in May 2017. The system aims to prevent sub-standard or dangerous vehicles from being imported, because it has negative fallout on the country and its economy as well as competitiveness.
Al Maeeini told WAM that UAE is one of the countries that stress on the indicators of life quality, in the way where governmental authorities cooperate to achieve the goals of UAE national agenda by 2021 that aim at raising the competitiveness regionally and globally.
He explained that used vehicles must be compatible with UAE control system of pre-owned vehicles. The system has smart search engine connected to central database that is easily accessible. It gathers information about vehicles from authentic sources (from governments of manufacturing countries) and seeks permission to review the vehicles' condition before importing.
