UAE announces paid New Year holiday for private sector employees

Federal government employees can do remote work on January 2, but those whose roles require on-site presence are expected to report to work as usual

UAE private sector employees can now enjoy a paid public holiday for New Year on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced.

The move follows a circular implementing the Cabinet’s decision on approved official holidays for both public and private sectors.

The UAE federal authority has also confirmed that Thursday, 1 January 2026, will be an official paid holiday for public-sector employees.

Following New Year’s Day, Friday, (January 2, 2026) will be a remote-work day for federal government employees, allowing them to balance work commitments with family time. Employees whose roles require on-site presence are expected to report to work as usual.
