A Swedish man and an American allegedly kidnapped and held a Pakistani man against his will and threatened to kill him and his wife and chop them off unless he paid them a ransom, a court heard.
The two, including a businessman, identified as U.L., 38, and a manager, G.M., 51, are accused of blackmailing the technician for a Dh100,000 ransom.
They could eventually extort a Dh75,000 cheque from his sister who came to his help, as per prosecution records.
The case dates back to January 29. The two men were charged in the Court of First Instance with false imprisonment, making criminal threats and blackmail, and physical assault.
The complainant, an advertisement technician, 34, said U.L. phoned him and invited him over to his flat in Jumeirah Village to discuss a project. There, they seized his mobile phone and laptop. U.L. asked him about the funding he earlier discussed for the project and punched him and he fell down. G.M. meanwhile brought an axe with which he threatened the complainant with, the latter claimed in the investigation.
The complainant could run away to a nearby petrol station where he hid in the washroom, but the pair followed him and lured him out.
They fooled him through a woman accomplice (at large) to accompany them back to the flat to work the matter out.
However, there they took his clothes off and called his wife and told her that he was injured in a car accident. They threatened to hurt her if he did not arrange Dh200,000 for them, but all they could get was Dh6,000.
They also called up his sister and the latter came later with her husband and handed them a cheque worth Dh75,000.
The complainant's wife said she found her husband lying down, stripped off his clothes and bearing torture marks and crying when she went to U.L.'s flat. His hair was cut.
U.L. told her that her husband had expropriated sums of money from him and told her to wait outside.
A police corporal said they recovered the Dh75,000 cheque and the complainant's laptop from U.L.'s place.
The officers found there a big collection of swords, knives and armours which U.L. claimed he was dealing in.
The trial will continue on December 21.
