Hyderabad: The ruling Telangana Rashra Samithi (TRS) is gearing up to face its first comprehensive political test after the formation of the new State in June 2014 in the form of elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) which accounts for nearly one-third of the State's total electorate in 10 districts.

The GHMC elections, which will be held on February 2, is crucial for the TRS since the ruling party has hardly been put to test in the state capital. Chief Minister and TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao, who has successfully decimated the opposition in the districts of Telangana in various by-elections and local bodies' polls since the formation of the state, is leaving no stone unturned to prove wrong the opposition claim that the ruling doesn't have a base strong enough to capture power in the city.

The elections to the GHMC also assume significance in view of the city's size and demographic profile. The crucial urban body has 150 wards covering 24 assembly constituencies spread over an area of 625 sq km. With a population of nearly 10 million, the city offers diverse set of challenges to political parties hoping to control the levers of power in the urban civic body.
