Sharjah has launched a set of smart traffic signals using tech such as sensors and detectors that monitor traffic volumes and adjust signal timings accordingly.

This means vehicles can pass through multiple green lights without stopping, provided they maintain a speed between 40kmph to 50 kmph. The smart signals comes under the “Green Traffic” initiative which helps reduce harmful emissions caused by frequent stopping and starting.

The system limits congestion, particularly during peak hours, and reduces wait times. It also boosts road safety for both pedestrians and motorists, minimising risk from uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.

Al Othmani highlighted the environmental benefits of the new system, which support Sharjah’s sustainability goals and efforts toward building a greener future.
