Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recorded the highest ever revenue from a distinctive licence plate auction, at Dh109,026,000.

The auction, conducted on Saturday, December 27, saw bidders pledge millions to own unique numbers. RTA offered 90 distinctive vehicle number plates, comprising two, three, four, and five-digit numbers, from the codes AA, BB, CC, K, N, O, R, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z at its 120th open auction.

Here are some of the highest winning bids:

  • BB12 - Dh9.66 million

  • AA25 - Dh8.04 million

  • BB30 - Dh6.74 million

  • CC100 - Dh4.21 million

The sale of number plates was subject to a 5 per cent value-added tax. In order to participate, customers needed to have a traffic file in Dubai and submit a security cheque worth Dh25,000, payable to RTA. There was also a non-refundable participation fee of Dh120, to be paid at Customer Happiness Centres. RTA also enabled payment by credit card through its website.

Priority was given to those who registered in advance.

The RTA holds such auctions in the spirit of neutrality and transparency, giving everyone an opportunity to acquire unique number plates — which carry symbolic value.
