Overtaking from the road's shoulder can endanger the lives of drivers, authorities warned. The area, marked by a yellow line, is only for emergencies, and is not a road lane for motorists to use in normal circumstances.

Authorities shared a video of a reckless driver overtaking from the left shoulder, along with failing to leave a safe distance, putting motorists' safety at risk. Watch the video here:

So, who can use the road shoulder? The space is meant to facilitate access to emergency vehicles, including the police, ambulance, and others. It is also used to aid the injured, and save lives.

Misuse of the shoulder, including overtaking from it, is a violation punishable by a fine of Dh1,000 and 6 traffic points.
