A three-year-old German girl drowned in the swimming pool of their residential compound in Al Barsha, behind the Mall of the Emirates, on Monday April 22) evening.
She was playing on her own as her two brothers were at school. But her dad Gerard, who works for a software company, was home when the incident happened, Khaleej Times has learnt.
Busy with some work at that time, the father thought the little girl was with their maid. Three minutes later, he noticed that she was nowhere inside the house and when he checked outside, he was shocked to see his daughter - floating motionless in the swimming pool.
As soon as they got her out of the water, they tried to revive her and then rushed her to Saudi German Hospital, but she was pronounced dead.
"The family is still shocked over what happened. We are grieving," Gerard told Khaleej Times, declining to add more details.
The girl's body was moved to the General Department of Forensic Medicine for a medical report to be completed, and it is expected to be handed to the family today.
Safety tips to prevent pool accidents
The Dubai Police have urged parents to keep an eye on their children at all times.
To prevent swimming pool accidents, in particular, they offered the following safety tips:
1-It is best to put up fences around a pool as a precautionary measure.
2-Keep doors and gates locked, especially those that lead to swimming pools.
3-For any swimming session, ensure that an adult who knows how to do a CPR is present.
