The move, which was announced in May this year is still to be implemented.

The work in this connection will begin very soon, officials said. However, they said that the plan of operating solar operated abras was still on the hold. Research in this connection is already under way, Khalid Al Zahid, the acting CEO of the Marine Agency of the RTA, said. “This is a difficult job. Running abras through Solar power requires a lot of tests and research. It is not an easy task. But then the RTA is working on the project. We hope that things will take concrete shape soon,” he added.

The agency is also studying the possibility of running the recently launched Waterbus to Sharjah.

“It is under our consideration. But then this would be coming at a later stage. We are presently studying all the routes and other aspects of the marine transport system,” he said.

“Very soon we would be converting three abras into CNG operated ones and then test them for a year. The RTA has started off with the related work and the abras would be converted.”

“We need to conduct a lot of tests and ensure that they are friendly ecologically and don’t pose any kind of risks to the people using the abra service. And for this, tests need to be conducted.”

“If all goes as per the plan and the abras work fine for a year, we would be converting all the abras into CNG operated ones. Also, the RTA is considering to opt for CNG when it comes to the all the public transport system of Dubai,” said Zahid.
