A student, who allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend's flatmates of killing them if they did not reveal her whereabouts, has been charged in court.
The 29-year-old Emirati student did not attend the first hearing of his trial in the Court of First Instance on Wednesday. He is being charged with making criminal threats.
A text message he sent to one of the women allegedly read: "Don't let me commit an act that is not in your good", while another message read: "Don't let me put you in my mind, you don't know how evil I become when I am angry".
The complaint was filed on April 11 last year.
One of the complainants, an Uzbek businesswoman, said the defendant's girlfriend used to stay in the same flat with them in Al Nahda but she left as she was causing trouble and her visa expired.
"She told me about her relation with the accused. She also showed me his photos on her phone," said the complainant.
Around midnight on April 10 last year, the complainant received a phone call from the student. "I have no idea how he got my number. He asked me about his girlfriend and her location. I told him she left and that I didn't know where she might be."
But the man, she claimed, started to threaten her. "He said if I didn't divulge her whereabouts, he would come to my place and attack me with a knife. He said he would kill me."
She did not take his calls after that.
He then allegedly sent her messages with the same threats. She sent him a message to stop calling and texting her or she would call the police.
The complainant added that the student's ex-girlfriend told her about some problems with him. "Before she left, she told me that he beat her up and there were injury marks on her face."
The defendant called the other flatmate after his calls were ignored by her, the businesswoman claimed.
"He threatened to kill me if he did not find his ex-girlfriend," said the other complainant, an Uzbek saleswoman.
The two women then lodged a complaint at Al Qusais police station.
A copy of the text messages the student allegedly sent to one of the women is being used by the public prosecution as part of the criminal evidence.
An audio recording, in which the student is heard threatening a woman has also been moved as evidence.
