A Nigerian female singer, identified as A.N., was arrested right after she allegedly sold a quantity of cannabis (commonly known as marijuana) to a police informant, a court heard. A quantity of the drug weighing 191 grammes was seized from her.
She has been charged in the Court of First Instance with possession of drug to sell.
Two other Nigerian women, who came with her in the cab when she met the informant and allegedly sold him the quantity for Dh300, were released with no charges.
All the women's urine sample tests came negative, according to the crime laboratory report. A police officer said that the arrest was made on October 25, last year following a tip off from a reliable informant that A.N. had a quantity of drugs and was about to sell it.
The anti narcotics department of the Dubai Police sent their informant, who acted as a prospective buyer, along with an undercover police lieutenant in the former's car to meet A.N. to pick up the drugs.
It was about midnight when A.N. arrived with two other women in a cab to meet the informant in Abu Hail area.
The police caught A.N red-handed as she was handing over the drugs and taking the money. She put up a strong resistance against the police officers but was restrained somehow.
The informant handed the police two rolls containing what is believed to be marijuana. The money belonging to the police was also taken from A.N.
A.N. would not sign on money bills' copy and denied having anything to do with the drugs. She claimed she went to see the informant because she knew him.
Two other women with A.N. were not charged in the case as no narcotics were found with them and it was established they had nothing to do with the drugs.
A.N. alleged during questioning that she had bought the drugs from a compatriot for Dh 300 prior to meeting the informant.
