SIM swap fraud: How to protect yourself in UAE

A relatively new form of fraud is victimising residents in the UAE. The fraud allows hackers to gain access to your bank accounts, credit car numbers and other personal data.
A SIM swap is a type of identity theft where attackers manager to get a new SIM card issued against a registered mobile number and gain access to sensitive information.
How does it work?
In a SIM swap fraud, the attackers obtain personal banking details and victims's registered mobile number using various social engineering tactics like vishing and phishing.
The scammer then approaches the victim's mobile operator with fake identity to obtain a duplicate SIM card.
The mobile operator deactivates the genuine SIM card and issues a new one to the attacker.
They are now ready to gain access to the victim's account and initiate financial transactions using their stolen banking information.
How should you protect yourself from the SIM swap fraud?
1. If your mobile number stops working for an unknown reason, get in touch with your telecom operator immediately.
2. Register your number for SMS and email alerts to stay updated about transaction on your bank account.
3. Avoid responding to unsolicited calls and text messages asking about your bank details.
