The Al Buraimi traffic signal intersection has been completed at a cost of Dh5 million by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Yousef Saleh Al Suwaiji, chairman of RTA, said the Haji Ismail Al Buraimi intersection-which was earlier a roundabout- will boost road safety and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city.
He added that RTA has drawn up a plan to develop and maintain all the intersections in the city to bring about improvement in the existing roads to ensure smooth flow of traffic. "The maintenance and development work of the other intersections will be announced as per the predetermined schedule," he pointed out.
Mohsen Balawan, director of Roads Maintenance Department at RTA, said that the development work of Al Buraimi intersection, located between Al Shahba and Al Darari industrial areas 6 and 12, included the removal of cement barriers on the sides of the roads, maintenance of the asphalt and sidewalks. He said that a third lane connecting all roads surrounding the intersection will eliminate traffic congestion and facilitate traffic movement.
Balwan added that the work included providing safety to pedestrians by building 1,600 meter of fences around the central island, and eight pedestrian crossings. All these were provided with flashing signs and safe poles.
He added that last year, RTA carried out development of the intersections of Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan Boualian. It also completed maintenance work for the Ali bin Ahmed Al Abdouli intersection.
