A number of Sharjah residents have been arrested for launching illegal fund-raisers, which they claimed were for the tenants of the fire-hit Abbco Tower, police said on Sunday.

These people were reportedly soliciting donations on social media, without the permission of authorities. And the funds they receive do not go to the fire victims, said Maj-Gen Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police.

"We interrogated them and directed them to hand over the donations to the official charity organisation that was tasked to lead relief efforts," he added.

Maj-Gen Al Shamsi urged the public to be wary of such scams and report any unauthorised fund-raisers to the police.
