Khaleej Times reported the plight of 33-year-old Jasmine Sultana after her video went viral on social media. In the video, a visibly injured Jasmine said she had been brutally assaulted by her husband. Responding to the video, Sharjah's Industrial Area police took her 47-year-old husband into custody and rushed her to Al Qasimi Hospital. A medical report from the hospital proved that the injuries were result of an assault.
The public prosecution refused to release the husband on bail and he is facing charges of assaulting his wife.
The police have referred the case to public prosecution for investigation.
According to preliminary investigations, the woman had been living in Sharjah with her two children - aged five years and 18 months - and her husband for many years. She said her husband assaulted her for years. On the day of the incident, he took her passport and those of their kids, in addition to her gold ornaments. He then assaulted her violently, punching her in the face, causing severe bleeding and swelling in her left eye, and injuries all over her body.
The husband also locked her up at home before leaving to office.
The wife said she didn't have any choice other than posting the video on Twitter to seek help. Within a few hours, the tweet went viral and a large number of people offered support to her.
The case will be heard at the Sharjah Criminal Court.
