A motorist who filmed himself driving at 200kmph on a Sharjah highway has been arrested, the police have said. The suspect took a video of the reckless feat and posted it on social media.

The video showing the suspect speeding on a highway in Khor Fakkan quickly went viral. After the police verified the video, they tracked the suspect down and arrested him.

The police have called on drivers to abide by traffic laws and respect the speed limits on roads.

The arrest comes two days after the Sharjah Police said a radar had caught a car speeding at 278kmph this year. This was among the 274 motorists who exceeded speeds of 200kmph in the first eight months of 2020.

Major Mishaal bin Khadim, head of the traffic engineering department, Sharjah Police, had warned that exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 80kmph in punishable with a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points and 60-day impoundment of the vehicle. For exceeding speed limits by more than 60kmph, the fine imposed is Dh2,000 and 12 black points, apart from confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days.
