Providing job opportunities for young people with determination at local government and private departments has been one of the greatest achievements of the SCHS.

A total of 378 people of determination with varied challenges are currently working at the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in 50 different departments, revealed a top official.

In an exclusive interview to Khaleej Times, Sheikha Jamila bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, director-general of the SCHS, said the authority has been developing the skills of determined ones and making them ready for the workforce by providing various therapeutic and educational services. "I urge the entities to trust the abilities of these people and give them appropriate jobs because caring for them is a social responsibility of the family and the community," she said.

Providing job opportunities for young people with determination at local government and private departments has been one of the greatest achievements of the SCHS, said Sheikha Jamila. "Masarat Development and Empowerment Centre, an affiliate of the SCHS, has succeeded in providing job opportunities to graduate students of determination. It employed 328 people of determination until the current academic year, in addition to 50 determined ones, who were appointed at different sections of the SCHS.

"Also, a media production and training centre was set up by four people of determination while a smart farm was opened at Khor Fakkan as an ambitious first-of-its-kind project in the region - all in hope to empower people of determination economically," she added.

"We are keen to provide the best educational environment to train people with different challenges to overcome them. Al Wafa School for Capacity Development in the Ramla area is devoted to people with severe challenges, including mental disabilities, by providing three evening hours for therapeutic and rehabilitation sessions, touch or music therapy along with family counselling and seminars.

"One of the biggest challenges for the families of determined people is being rejected by private centres when cases are severe for them to handle or if a long-term rehabilitation is required. Our role at the SCHS do not stop with educating people of determination. We are keen to secure their future and help them enter the workforce," she said.

"Dozens of talented students of determination have graduated from universities and the SCHS is trying to ensure suitable jobs for them. But, there is a general lack of trust to employ them. Recently, the SCHS supported the graduation of the first student with hearing impairment in architecture, and secured him a position with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development. It is a model for all other government departments to follow - to trust the abilities and talent of these individuals and support them with potential opportunities," added Sheikha Jamila.
