More than 3,936 bachelors were evicted from185 'family only' residences during 1,514 inspections carried out by the Sharjah Municipality in Al Qadisiya area.
The civic body also issued fines to owners of 161 residential units after they failed to comply with subletting regulations. The inspection team served 169 warning notices during the operation.
The municipality, in coordination with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa), snapped all connections to 79 homes after detecting violations committed by its residents, including partitions and illegal power supply.
The massive crackdown came following directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
A number of residents in Al Qadisiah had earlier complained about lack of privacy, unruly behaviour and thefts.
Thabet Al Tarifi, director-general of Sharjah Municipality, said that bachelors in residential areas meant only for families are not just a grave threat to them but they also violate the emirate's housing rules. In some cases, 10 people share one room.
He noted that the municipality is keen to regulate the relationship between the owner and the tenant through lease contracts in accordance with the prescribed conditions, including prohibition of subleasing. The municipality is making efforts in preserving the aesthetic appearance of the houses and safeguarding the privacy, security, and safety of families, he pointed out.
Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police, averred that the authorities began its tasks entrusted to them after directives issued by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. The police teams participate in the inspections, while actively contributing to the eviction operations.
The municipality will continue its campaign in the area and notify the violators to vacate the accommodations and find an alternative housing.
