Business owners in Sharjah have been banned from selling Zamzam water, the Sharjah City Municipality announced on Tuesday.

The move aims to reduce cases of fraud, product manipulation and deception, while also providing safe and sound food to the public according to applicable health requirements and standards. The municipality will also be stepping up its monitoring to ensure that shops are complying with the new regulations.

It is known for often carrying out surprise inspections to detect any food products that do not meet health standards and to reduce cases of fraud, especially in the case of Zamzam, which is difficult to differentiate from normal water.

The ban comes after a man was arrested in Sharjah for selling ordinary tank water as Zamzam water by converting a residential property into an illegal water bottling facility.

Authorities observed vehicles loading bottled water from a house, prompting a raid on the premises. During the raid, officials caught the person inside the premises.

They seized cartons and plastic bottles labelled as Zamzam water, which were being filled under unhygienic conditions and promoted through social media. They sold the water at a premium price. The Sharjah Municipality immediately initiated legal and administrative procedures.

The authority urged residents to report any violations by calling on 993, and warned them to not deal with any unlicensed food establishments or purchase any products through social media sites except after ensuring their source and licensing by the concerned authorities in the emirate.
