His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a directive to allocate Dh4.5 million for the purchase of new titles from publishing houses participating at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF). The books will be distributed to libraries across Sharjah.
The Sharjah Ruler's initiative will ensure that Sharjah's public libraries will be updated with new titles that will serve researchers, intellectuals, experts, school pupils, university students and all those interested in literature and culture. It also supports publishers and book industry stakeholders, enabling them to further develop this vital sector.
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, chairman of the SIBF, expressed appreciation for the gesture, saying Dr Sheikh Sultan's "continuous support for reading will contribute in developing culture in Sharjah". "The new books - which will be purchased tonight (Monday) - will be added to the two million books already available on the shelves of Sharjah libraries."
