Mosques in Sharjah will be among the several buildings that will go dark tonight. Non-essential lights will be switched off at all major mosques in the Emirate from 8.30pm to 9.30pm as the world comes together for Earth Hour.
DON'T MISS: UAE Earth Hour: It's more than 60 minutes of darkness
The Department Of Islamic Affairs in Sharjah made the announcement on Saturday.
Earth Hour, observed on the last Saturday of March every year, will see the participation of more than 140 countries this year.
Government departments across the country are urging residents to join the world by switching off lights in their apartments for one hour.
Organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the event is a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
