Sharjah implements new rules for defaulting debtors, no jail time without investigation
This is based on the aim to preserve human dignity and achieve justice, under the directives of the Sharjah Ruler

Sharjah Judicial Council approved implementation of the decision that defaulting debtors must not be imprisoned, in the interest of preserving human dignity and upholding justice.
The decision to imprison a defaulting debtor will only be made after a brief investigation during which the creditor must demonstrate the debtor’s ability to pay or confirm that the debtor has concealed or hidden assets or is failing to make payments without a valid reason.

This decision comes under the directives of Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
The Judicial Council also directed the Public Prosecution in Sharjah to coordinate with the competent government agencies concerned with family and social affairs.
This initiative aims to address disputes amicably and encourage reconciliation between parties before any family dispute lawsuits are filed or brought before the appropriate court.
The meeting also discussed a number of topics on the meeting agenda related to following up on the progress of the joint committee with the Ministry of Justice to transition to local staff, as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the system and the efficiency of judicial performance.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Judicial Council, presided over the meeting of the Council at the House of Wisdom on Wednesday morning.
