As many as 40 flats were found to have been sublet by their actual tenants to people who were staying illegally in the country.

The civil inspection department of the Sharjah Municipality carried out the crackdown and detected the irregularities.

Immediate action was taken against the original tenants of the flats and all services to the buildings were disconnected.

The campaign was launched to arrest violators, said Khalifa Bu Ghanem Al Suwaidi, director of civil inspection department at Sharjah Municipality. "Before the crackdown was conducted, we had received complaints from a number of people who noticed that the flats were being rented out illegally, either on a daily or weekly basis. Majority of the flats were in residential areas that are only designated for families."

After the crackdown, water and electricity were disconnected from the flats, that were mainly located in Al Nahda area.

"These tenants who illegally sublet their flats are only looking for money while overlooking the safety and security of other tenants of the building. They sublet the flats and stay in other buildings as they are married and have their flat contracts attested."

"Subletting flats to illegals is very risky and can result in crimes and robberies."

Al Suwaidi urged members of the society to immediately report any illegal activity to avoid dangerous fallout.
