The workers were demanding a Dh300 increase in their salaries and proper overtime payments.

“We cannot survive on our existing Dh600 salary as the cost of living has shot up while the exchange rate for the dirham is plummeting. Moreover, the company has begun to reduce overtime payments,” said one of the Indian workers.

However, he added, “Our company's management has promised to address our demands after talks with government and police officials - which is what prompted us to return to work,” he said.

Colonel Obeid bin Suroor from the PCLA said, “Our officials met with a group of workers and successfully persuaded them to resume work. We listened to their demands and it turned out that they were only pressing for a wage hike. We checked several other aspects, including their accommodation and whether or not there was a timely payment of salaries.

“The company has been respecting the contracts signed with the labourers. We will also talk to officials of the contracting company tomorrow.”Meanwhile, a company representative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We are looking into the grievances of our workers and will try our best to address them.”
