Santana regales crowd with his soulful strings

DUBAI - As Carlos Santana's nimble fingers caressed his guitar strings and the melodious notes electrified the audience at Dubai Festival City last night, it was the women's attention that he was trying to capture with his soulful music.

Santana made this reflection in a spiritual mood while meeting with the media in Dubai yesterday, describing the women in his life as those who had inspired him and whose essence is reflected in his five-decade career.

“Beauty, elegance, grace, dignity, purity and innocence,” Santana named his inspiration. “Guilt, judgement, contempt, shame and fear - they're not things I believe in.”

Santana has worked with many artistes, most recently Shakira, Chad Kroeger and Rob Thomas, but it was the spirituality of his music that he was true to.

“All I have to do is go inside my heart, listen and compliment (the other artiste),” he said. “I use music and spirituality to communicate.”

It's a recipe that seems to have worked for Santana, with the Supernatural album alone gaining nine Grammy awards while 2002's Shaman was also a number one multi-platinum album.

Tickets to the 15,000-capacity concert, organised by Mirage Promotions, sold out late last week, heralding a doubtless successful world tour that kicked off in Dubai last night.
