The new penalties include a fine of Dh100,000, paying costs of firefighting and closure of firms, according to a top official at the MoI.

Lieutenant General Mohammad Qardous Al Ameri, Director of the Civil Defence Department at the MoI, said on Sunday that the Civil Defence Law at present only allows for issuing notices to the violators.

“In case of not complying with the safety standards, the civil defence inspectors will first issue notices to the landlords and company owners. Penalties will be imposed if the violations continue,” said Lt-Gen. Al Ameri.

He added that the new regulations included proposal to establish an inspection authority to be concerned with inspecting the firms, labour accommodations, pre-fabricated buildings, and worksites to ensure that they abide by the standards.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Department distributed eight new fire fighting vehicles valued at Dh21.6 million in the Northern Emirates covering
Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah.

The new vehicles were purchased from an allocation of Dh40 million by MoI in January this year to provide the Northern Emirates with the latest fire fighting and rescue technology.

As per the directives of Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Interior, the ministry will allocate Dh30 million for the 2010 budget to provide the required tools for the civil defence departments.
