The items were destroyed as per government rules.

A whopping 16,320kg of food and cosmetic products were confiscated by the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality in 2019.

The items, seized by the department of public health, were destroyed as per rules, according to a senior official.

Shaimaa Al Tunaiji, director of the department, said the staff inspectors of her department confiscated up to 3,311 food and cosmetic products last year. "Some of the food products, offered for sale, were of unknown origin. They also spotted 770 violations in 2019," she added.

"The food control section recorded 328 violations and issued 887 warning letters last year, while the veterinary section spotted 162 violations, and issued 43 warning letters."

Records show that the municipal laboratory tested 5,963 food and water samples last year. "Up to 469 of these samples proved failed to meet or clear the set standards," she added.

Al Tunaiji said all food entities and water desalination stations in Ras Al Khaimah are under strict control. "These entities include 33 factories and stations."

To enhance the ease of public access to municipal services, the department will launch an electronic inspection system in the second half of this year, Al Tunaiji said. "This is part of the department's digital transformation and five of the services have already become electronic."

Meanwhile, more than 146,000kg of foodstuff were distributed among 800 low-income and poor families by the RAK Municipality as part of the Food Bank initiative launched last year on the Corniche Al Qawasim.
