The scorching temperature, apart from maintenance works have been blamed for spike in fish price in Ras Al Khaimah.
Humaid Al Zaabi, deputy chairman of the RAK Fish Society, said most fishermen don't go fishing because of the sweltering temperature. "This has led to a sharp drop in the amount of fish on sale at the Ras Al Khaimah and Muaireedh fish markets."
Also, many fishermen assistants are also on leave, he added. "The old fish market is also under a renovation and fish counters have been shifted to the open non-air-conditioned auction area that consumers do not like because of the heat."
Fishermen have suspended their fishing activities until October 15, he said. "Qaraqeer (fishing net) is now used only to catch fishes permitted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment."
The fishes available in the market include kanaad, jash, shekhibi, safi, sheri, and grouper, Al Zaabi said. "The price differs as per supply and demand."
Currently, 1kg of sheri and safi fish is each available for Dh30 to Dh35."
