A woman employee of a local government body in the emirate has been sentenced to six months in jail after being found guilty of embezzling Dh104,000.
The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court also ordered the Gulf national to pay a fine equivalent to the amount she embezzled. The defendant forged a number of promotion permits over several weeks.
As per court records, the case unfolded when the inspection teams of the complainant department discovered that some shops were involved in illegal and unpermitted promotion campaigns.
Investigations showed that the outlets had approached the defendant, who abused her position in the customer happiness centre, to get the due permits.
She collected the prescribed fees, but instead gave them undocumented papers and didn't enter the same in the department's system while siphoning off the money.
The probe led the department to the employee who, it turned out, had forged several permits for unauthorised promotion campaigns, worth Dh104,000, over several weeks.
The suspect was referred to the RAK public prosecution, which accused her of abusing her position as a public officer and embezzling the money.
As per the indictment sheet, she was also charged with forging electronic documents and using them despite being aware that they were counterfeited, and squandering public funds.
The suspect stood trial at the RAK criminal court which found her guilty, and sentenced her to six months in jail, ordered her to return the embezzled money, and slapped her with a hefty fine of Dh104,000.
