Another 3D zebra crossing comes up in UAE

Ras Al Khaimah - The project is aimed to curb run-over accidents and curb speeding violations.

The Ras Al Khaimah Police have started painting 3D zebra crossings in the emirate in a bid to make drivers stop, look and listen. The first one in the emirate could now be seen on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Road.

Used in different countries like the UK and India, this innovative take on pedestrian lanes has been proven to slow down traffic and prevent run-over accidents.

With the crossing designed to have a 3D effect, it makes pedestrians look like they're walking on floating blocks across the road.

"The project is aimed at ensuring road users' safety. The new 3D pedestrian crossings have been proven efficient in decreasing run-over accidents," Brigadier Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department of the RAK Police, said on Thursday.

"It's also cost-effective," he added.

Police reminder

While the lanes are meant to remind drivers to give priority to pedestrians and observe speed limits, Brig Al Naqbi also reminded people to cross the road only from designated areas, especially at night.

"They should also make sure the road is clear and safe to cross."

A fine of Dh500 and six black points shall be slapped on any driver who doesn't give priority to pedestrians, as per Article 43 of the federal traffic law.
