Seismologist Mohammad Jaragat of National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said nothing was registered or felt in the UAE region as a result of the earthquake that occurred around 2.30pm local time.

“It has no relation to the UAE,” Jaragat said. “It's on the other side of the plate. Even with strong quakes there is no effect here in the UAE.”

The earthquake in Lebanon had its epicentre just northeast of Tyre, but tremors were felt in Beirut and Israel.

Lebanon's National Centre for Scientific Research said another tremor of “similar magnitude or stronger” was expected in the 24 hours after the earthquake while seismology experts in Israel warned of a major earthquake within years because of a faultline in the region, according to AFP.

However, Jaragat cautioned that earthquakes even as high as 6 on the Richter scale were normal for the Arabian plate and did not signal a severe earthquake.
